Key Takeaways

  • Zoho is a localized payroll option, while Borderless EOR addresses the overseas employer gap.
  • Zoho may fit where local payroll and Zoho accounting connections are the main needs; EOR is not needed if the employer arrangement already exists.

A business using Zoho for accounting may find its next payroll decision comes down to the country edition. Zoho Payroll markets localized products for the US, Canada and UK, so a comparison should start with where employees work and which payroll functions they need.

Hiring abroad introduces another question: who will employ the person? Borderless AI's EOR service supplies an employment arrangement without establishing your own local entity, alongside onboarding, contracts, payroll and benefits. Zoho can remain the right local payroll tool while Borderless handles a particular overseas employee.

Zoho Payroll supports more than US payroll

A US, Canadian or British headquarters does not tell you which payroll edition an overseas employee needs. Check the employee's work location and the employer setup first.

Zoho's current edition selector lists the UK, GCC, Canada, India and USA. That is a set of localized products, so features should be checked by edition rather than assumed to apply everywhere.

For the priority markets:

  • United States: The US pricing page distinguishes single-state payroll on Standard from multi-state payroll on Professional. Both list automatic federal, state and local tax payments and filings.
  • Canada: The Canadian edition advertises federal and provincial tax calculations, CPP/QPP, EI and QPIP, plus generation of T4, RL1 and ROE documents. Generation alone should not be read as a promise that every document is submitted or every tax payment is remitted for you.
  • United Kingdom: Zoho now markets a UK edition covering PAYE and National Insurance calculations and statutory payroll functions. Its edition selector specifies BACS-ready payment files. Check the current UK product directly when assessing older comparisons.

Availability of local payroll software does not, by itself, supply the employer for an international hire.

Where Zoho Payroll is the stronger fit

Zoho deserves a close look if your main problem is connecting employee pay with accounting and expenses. Its US product brings payroll processing, tax automation, employee self-service and off-cycle payments into one application.

The Canadian product describes automatic journal posting to Zoho Books and expense reimbursements alongside salaries. Those connections make the payroll decision partly an accounting decision: a payroll tool that fits your existing ledger can be more useful than an unrelated feature you rarely use.

If you already have the employer arrangements for your team, an EOR may add a service you do not need. Evaluate payroll administration on its own requirements.

Where Borderless AI earns its place

Borderless AI becomes relevant when the missing piece is an employer abroad. Its EOR offering lets a business hire without setting up its own foreign entity, with employment contracts, payroll, taxes and benefits handled within that arrangement.

Consider a company using Zoho for its home-market staff and recruiting its first employee overseas. The useful question is who will employ that person locally. Adding another payroll edition does not answer that question.

Keeping home payroll in Zoho while using Borderless for the overseas employee can be a sensible operating choice. Agree on reporting and accounting across both services before buying. If your company already employs people through its own overseas entities, evaluate Borderless's separate global payroll service instead of assuming EOR is required.

Compare pricing within the right service scope

Zoho's US annual pricing displays Standard at $29 per organization per month plus $5 per employee per month. Professional displays $49 plus $7 per employee per month and adds multi-state payroll, bonus runs and pay-run approvals.

Those are US software prices under annual billing. They are not the price of employing an overseas worker, and they should not be applied to Canada or the UK.

For Borderless, establish whether you need EOR or payroll before comparing commercial terms. Compare service fees separately from salary, employer contributions and benefits. A smaller software subscription does not replace an employer arrangement.

Two questions before you decide

Is Zoho Payroll included in Zoho One?

For US customers, Zoho's licensing FAQ says the Standard plan is included, with user access tied to Zoho One licenses. Professional features require a separate subscription. Verify the terms for your edition rather than assuming US licensing applies elsewhere.

Can Zoho Payroll pay contractors?

The US FAQ says the US edition supports W-2 employees and does not process 1099 contractor payments. It identifies 1099 filing through Zoho Books as a separate function. Filing a contractor form and processing contractor payments are different requirements.

Choose around the employment problem first: Zoho for supported local payroll under your employer setup, Borderless EOR when you need an employer abroad. Then compare the edition, workflow and costs that apply to those workers.
