For a bookkeeper who already runs invoicing, inventory and payroll in AccountEdge, hiring abroad creates a specific question: can the existing payroll setup handle the new employee, or does the business need an employer in that country?
AccountEdge's payroll add-on supports US and Canadian payroll. Borderless AI's EOR service provides an employment arrangement for international employees without requiring the customer to establish its own local entity.
If the problem is running payroll for staff your business already employs in the US or Canada, AccountEdge deserves consideration on its own terms. If the problem is employing someone abroad without your own local employer infrastructure, that is where Borderless becomes relevant. An overseas hire does not automatically justify replacing the accounting system.
The differences that affect the decision
AccountEdge's pricing page and Borderless's global payroll page describe different product scopes. Compare the work each proposal covers before comparing fees.
Where AccountEdge makes sense
AccountEdge is accounting software with payroll attached. Its current plans include Pro for a single user, Network Edition for simultaneous access, and Hosted for browser access. Pro and Network Edition remain desktop subscriptions. This matters if the person approving payroll works remotely: the choice of accounting edition is part of the decision.
The payroll features include hourly and salaried wages, overtime, commissions, deductions, timesheets, and sick and vacation accruals. For an existing AccountEdge team, the appeal is keeping those records in the same financial workflow.
AccountEdge also offers Full Service Payroll, powered by SurePayroll, a Paychex company. The product page identifies this as US only. It is an outsourcing option for businesses that want to review and confirm payroll while the service handles payroll tax payments. Buyers should distinguish this from processing payroll themselves in AccountEdge.
How much does AccountEdge Payroll cost?
As checked on October 19, 2026, published pricing is in USD:
- AccountEdge Pro: $20 per month.
- Payroll add-on: $20 per month for unlimited employees.
- Network Edition: $30 per month, including two users.
- Hosted: $50 per user per month.
For a new single-user Pro customer, Pro plus the payroll add-on therefore starts at USD $40 per month, before optional services. An existing subscriber adding payroll faces a different incremental cost.
The setup guide explains that payroll cannot be purchased independently of an AccountEdge subscription. Direct deposit requires a merchant account and approval, and the US Payroll Forms Service is a separate annual service.
Do not add the $20 payroll charge to a full-service quote automatically: AccountEdge's add-on FAQ says full-service customers do not need that add-on. Ask for the full-service price and included services separately.
These software and payroll fees are not a useful substitute for an EOR quote, which covers a different employment role.
Does AccountEdge support Canadian or UK payroll?
For Canada, install the Canadian edition. AccountEdge says its US and Canadian versions have different tax handling, payroll tables and government forms. Canadian payroll includes federal and provincial tables, with Canadian year-end procedures. Subscriptions are billed in USD.
UK readers should keep edition history separate from the current offer reviewed here. AccountEdge's upgrade guidance treats UK files as a different product path and directs those users to Mamut. Do not assume a historical AccountEdge UK guide means the current US/Canada payroll add-on handles UK payroll.
Likewise, access to a hosted accounting file from another country does not establish payroll support for employees working there.
Can you keep AccountEdge and use Borderless abroad?
Yes, that can be a sensible division of responsibilities. Consider a US business that wants to retain AccountEdge for its books and existing payroll while hiring an employee in Canada. The first decision is who will legally employ the Canadian worker. Having software with Canadian tax tables does not, by itself, answer that question.
Borderless's EOR model covers employment agreements, onboarding, payroll, taxes, benefits and employment compliance while the customer manages the employee's work. If your business already has the employer infrastructure it needs, discuss payroll services instead of assuming EOR is necessary.
Before committing, ask how invoices, employer costs, currency differences and department allocations will be recorded in AccountEdge. Request a sample report and agree who reconciles it. Treat this as an accounting handoff to design.
For a business staying within its existing US or Canadian employment setup, the stronger next step may simply be selecting the right AccountEdge edition and deciding between self-processed and full-service payroll. Bring Borderless into the decision when there is an international employment or payroll requirement to solve.
