Saskatchewan has 10 public holidays under The Saskatchewan Employment Act, including Saskatchewan Day in August. Every employee earns public holiday pay, whether or not they normally work that day.

Rules for employers
Who qualifies for holiday pay
• There is no minimum length of service. New employees qualify.
• Holiday pay is owed whether or not the holiday falls on a day the employee normally works.
• No holiday pay is owed if employment ends before the holiday.
If an employee works on a holiday
An employee who works a public holiday gets 1.5× their regular rate for all hours worked, plus public holiday pay. Full-time employees of hospitals, schools, nursing homes, hotels and restaurants can
instead get 1.5× plus a paid day off within the same 4-week period.
If a holiday falls on a day off or during vacation
Because holiday pay is owed regardless of schedule, no substitute day is needed. If your business is normally closed on Sundays, New Year's Day, Christmas Day and Remembrance Day move to Monday when they fall on a Sunday. With employee agreement, you can observe a holiday on another day within 4 weeks. In 2026, all 10 public holidays fall on weekdays.
Exemptions
Hourly construction employees receive 4% of wages instead of paid holidays. Special rules apply to
drilling rigs and commercial hog operations.
How to calculate holiday pay in Saskatchewan
Public holiday pay = 5% of wages earned in the 4 weeks before the holiday. Wages include vacation pay and earlier holiday pay. Overtime is excluded.
Example: an employee earns $25 an hour, works 8 hours a day, and earned $4,000 over 20 days in the past 4 weeks.
