Quebec has eight statutory holidays under the Act respecting labour standards and the National Holiday Act. Employers choose either Good Friday or Easter Monday, and there's no 1.5× premium

for working a holiday.

Rules for employers

Who qualifies for holiday pay

• All employees qualify, whatever their length of service.

• They aren't absent without your authorization or a valid reason on the working day before or after the holiday. This rule doesn't apply to the Fête nationale.

If an employee works on a holiday

There is no premium in Quebec. An employee who works a holiday gets wages for the work done plus either the holiday indemnity or a compensatory day off. The day off must be taken within 3 weeks before or after the holiday; for June 24, it's the working day before or after.

If a holiday falls on a day off or during vacation

If a holiday falls on a day the employee doesn't normally work, pay the indemnity or give a compensatory day off on an agreed date. Canada Day moves to July 2 and the Fête nationale to June 25 when they fall on a Sunday. In 2026, all eight

statutory holidays fall on weekdays.

Exemptions

Some categories of workers excluded from the Act respecting labour standards aren't covered. Collective agreements and decrees can allow longer periods for compensatory days.

How to calculate holiday pay in Quebec

Holiday indemnity = 1/20 of wages earned in the 4 complete pay weeks before the holiday week. Overtime is excluded and tips are included. Employees paid by commission receive 1/60 of wages from the previous 12 weeks.

Example: an employee earns $25 an hour, works 8 hours a day, and earned $4,000 over 20 days in the past 4 weeks.

Scenario Owed for the holiday
Holiday off $4,000 ÷ 20 = $200
Works 8 hours, indemnity option $200 in wages + $200 indemnity = $400
Works 8 hours, day-off option $200 in wages, plus a compensatory day off
