Rules for employers

Who qualifies for holiday pay

• They don't miss their last scheduled shift before or first scheduled shift after the holiday without permission or a valid reason.

• They don't refuse to work a holiday they were asked to work.

If an employee works on a holiday

An employee who works a paid holiday gets either 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked plus holiday pay, or regular wages plus a paid day off on an agreed date before their next vacation.

If a holiday falls on a day off or during vacation

If a paid holiday falls on a day the employee doesn't normally work, give them a paid day off on another day. In 2026, all eight paid holidays fall on weekdays.

Exemptions

Athletes, returning officers and election clerks are excluded. Under the new Act, holiday pay must appear as a separate line on pay statements.

How to calculate holiday pay in Prince Edward Island

Holiday pay = 5% of regular wages earned in the 4 weeks before the holiday. Overtime is excluded.

Example: an employee earns $25 an hour, works 8 hours a day, and earned $4,000 over 20 days in the past 4 weeks.

Scenario Owed for the holiday
Holiday off 5% × $4,000 = $200
Works 8 hours, premium option $200 + (8 × $25 × 1.5) = $500
Works 8 hours, day-off option $200 in regular wages, plus a $200 paid day off later
