Newfoundland and Labrador has six public holidays under the Labour Standards Act. Other provincial holidays, such as St. Patrick's Day and Orangemen's Day, apply only to the provincial public service.

Who qualifies for holiday pay

• The holiday doesn't fall within the employee's first 30 days of employment.

• They don't miss their regular working day before or after the holiday without a reason or your consent.

If an employee works on a holiday

An employee who works a public holiday gets double their regular rate for hours worked, or a paid day off within 30 days, or an extra paid day added to their annual vacation.

If a holiday falls on a day off or during vacation

If a public holiday falls on a day the employee doesn't normally work, give them the first working day after the holiday off with pay, or another day you agree on. In 2026, all six public holidays fall on weekdays.

Collective agreements can substitute other days for public holidays, as long as the total number
