Rules for employers
Who qualifies for holiday pay
• There is no minimum length of service.
• They aren't absent without permission on their last scheduled workday before or first scheduled workday after the holiday, or on the holiday if scheduled to work it.
If an employee works on a holiday
An employee who works a general holiday gets 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked, plus general holiday pay. Some businesses, including hotels, restaurants, hospitals and continuous operations, can instead pay regular wages and give another paid day off within 30 days.
If a holiday falls on a day off or during vacation
If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday the employee doesn't work, give them the next regular workday off with holiday pay. If it falls on another day off or during vacation, give another paid day off. Any holiday except Orange Shirt Day can be moved to another day with a majority or union agreement. In 2026, all nine general holidays fall on weekdays.
Exemptions
Construction employees receive 4% of gross earnings instead of paid general holidays. Election officials and enumerators are excluded.
How to calculate holiday pay in Manitoba
General holiday pay = a regular day's pay. If hours or wages vary, use 5% of wages, excluding overtime, earned in the 4 weeks before the holiday.
Example: an employee earns $25 an hour, works 8 hours a day, and earned $4,000 over 20 days in the past 4 weeks.
