Onboarding is the process of familiarizing a new employee with an organization through education, networking, and training.

Onboarding is the process of familiarizing a new employee with an organization through education, networking, and training.

The purpose of onboarding is to introduce a new employee to their role and company over a brief period of time. The onboarding process generally includes:

  • Educating the new employee on the company’s values, mission and governance.
  • Introducing the new hire to colleagues. This will help build the employee’s network and get them familiar with the company culture.
  • Familiarizing the employee with company processes and tools.
  • Educating the employee on expectations and tasks they can be expected to do in their role.
  • Establishing positive employee relationships.

The Onboarding Process

The onboarding process includes many steps. While these differ from employer to employer, this is a general overview of the process.

Preboarding

Preboarding happens immediately after the new employee has accepted their offer, but before their official start date.

Orientation

Orientation is one step in the onboarding process. Orientation sessions usually take place on the employee’s first day and are led by human resources. Orientation can last anywhere from an hour to an entire day. Once orientation sessions are complete, the rest of the onboarding process can continue.

Integration

After the new employee is set up with basic processes, it’s time to integrate them into the company. This can be done by setting up introductions and overseeing their training.

Ongoing support

Throughout the onboarding process, managers should check in with their new hire on a regular basis. This will help the employee integrate and feel comfortable. After a while, these meetings will need to happen less frequently as the new hire has more autonomy and tasks.

Generally, there is no definitive end date to the onboarding process. It ends when the employee feels integrated and confident in their role within the company.

Once they can complete their tasks with little to no oversight and are familiar with processes, the process is seen as complete.

An increasing number of companies have started utilizing employee onboarding software tools and platforms. These tools, like an EOR, can make the onboarding process seamless, organized, and efficient.
