What is

Happy Hours

?

Another term for ‘after-work hours.’ This is a standard time when coworkers engage and interact with each other. This term was initially coined for the duration when bars and restaurants offer food and beverages at discounted prices. Since employees generally used these locations to unwind, employers extended the term to offices.

Happy hours is another term for ‘after-work hours.’ This is a standard time where coworkers engage and interact with each other. This term was initially coined for the duration when bars and restaurants offer food and beverages at discounted prices, but has evolved to be more generally: an after-work social activity among co-workers.

Happy hours aren’t necessarily company-organized, but rather casually organized by colleagues. This is a way to connect with one another in a casual, non-office environment.

Happy hours can include drinks after work in an alternate location, like a local bar or restaurant; or can take place in the office – space permitting.

Things to keep in mind when hosting a happy hour

  • Not everyone drinks alcohol. If going to a bar or restaurant, it should be communicated that anyone is permitted to attend and drinking is not mandatory. Similarly, if hosting a “Happy Hour’ in the office space, ensure there are non-alcoholic options available.
  • Some people have other commitments. Not everyone can make the time to stay after work hours and hang out. Some colleagues may have children to pick up, other social plans or additional jobs they need to get to. Similarly, ‘Happy Hour’ attendance should not come at the expense of completing projects.
  • Casual doesn’t mean unprofessional. ‘Happy Hours’ can be a time to unwind from the work day and have more candid discussions with colleagues. While this is a healthy way to build rapport and strengthen relationships, do not take this as an opportunity to speak ill of the company or management. You never know who is listening or who may not have your best interests at heart.
