Termination Process

Contracts with fixed terms of up to 90 days are permitted.

Employees may be fired for reasons specified in labor law.

To terminate an employee for just cause, the employer must provide the employee and the trade union with a written indictment note within 30 days of the fault. The employee has 15 days to respond, and the trade union has five days more to consult. Following that, the employer has 30 days to make a decision.

Notice period

Employees in Mozambique are generally entitled to at least 30 days’ notice.

Probation Period

The probation period in Mozambique is 90 days.

Severance Details

Employees on indefinite-term contracts are generally eligible for severance pay.

  • Employees earning between one and seven times the national minimum wage: receive 30 days of pay for each year of service
  • Employees earning eight to ten times the national minimum wage: 15 days pay per year of service
  • Employees earning 11-16 times the national minimum wage: 10 days pay per year of service
  • Employees earning sixteen times the national minimum wage: three days pay per year of service
