Choose an India employer of record by asking one question first: can the provider reproduce a gross-to-net payroll for the employee's work state that shows the Code on Wages definition, EPF and ESI treatment, professional tax, and every filing owner?

Best employer of record services in India: complete ranking

Rank Provider Best for Public EOR price India employment model Main diligence point
1 Borderless AI Owned-entity service with transparent pricing $579 per employee/month Owned India entity Request an itemized India quote
2 Asanify India-focused teams prioritizing local payroll depth Starts at $99 per employee/month Wholly owned Indian entity Check any onboarding fee and the model in other countries
3 Deel Multi-country teams consolidating HR and payroll Starts at $599 per employee/month Wholly owned Indian entity Compare platform breadth with India-only needs
4 Remote Standardized owned-entity delivery across countries $699 per employee/month Owned India entity Confirm benefits, payroll cutoff, and contract term
5 Native Teams Teams combining employment and expense tools Starts at $99 per employee/month Local India entity; ownership unverified Request the entity name, ownership, and final fee
6 RemoFirst Cost-conscious international teams Starts at $199 per employee/month India EOR available; entity ownership unverified Confirm the employing entity and service scope

These are provider service fees. Salary, statutory employer costs, benefits, currency conversion, setup charges, and non-standard services may sit outside the headline price.

India payroll starts with the work state and the employee's PF history

India's four labour codes took effect on November 21, 2025, consolidating 29 central labour laws. The Ministry of Labour and Employment published the central labour rules for all four codes on May 8, 2026.

That consolidation did not turn India into one uniform payroll jurisdiction. Labour sits under both central and state authority. The employee's work state can change professional tax, local registration, leave administration, working conditions, and filing procedure. Employee category, establishment type, wage structure, and benefits create further branches.

The wage definition creates another check. Excluded remuneration components that cross the Code on Wages limit are added back into wages, which can change statutory calculations. A provider needs the compensation structure before it can produce a defensible cost model.

An INR 100,000 rehearsal exposes the real decision points

Take a fictional employee earning INR 100,000 gross per month. That single number is not enough to calculate payroll. Give every finalist the same facts and require this proof:

Payroll question What the proposal should show
Work state Applicable professional tax, local registrations, leave rules, and filing calendar
Wage structure Salary components, the statutory wage definition, and any amount added back under the 50% rule
PF history Existing EPF membership, excluded-employee analysis, contribution base, and any higher-wage election
ESI coverage Coverage result, wage threshold, employer and employee rates, and reason for exclusion when it does not apply
Benefits and bonus Eligibility, wage base, accrual method, and employer cost
Filing ownership Named owner, approval cutoff, filing date, payment evidence, and correction process

Under the standard EPFO rules, an existing member remains in the fund after pay exceeds INR 15,000. When contributions use the statutory ceiling, the 12% employee and employer shares are INR 1,800 each. A new employee joining above the ceiling without prior membership can produce a different result, and a valid higher-wage arrangement changes the base again.

ESI uses a separate test. Current ESIC guidance applies a 3.25% employer rate and 0.75% employee rate to covered employees, with the standard wage ceiling at INR 21,000 per month. The fictional INR 100,000 employee sits above that ceiling, but the payroll file should still record the coverage decision instead of silently omitting the line.

The rehearsal is intentionally incomplete until a work state and PF history are supplied. That is the point. Two employees with the same gross salary can produce different statutory rows, net pay, registrations, and filing calendars.

Build every India quote from the same payroll facts

The service fee is only one row in the budget. Provident fund, state insurance, gratuity, bonus, professional tax, benefits, and exit costs use different bases and triggers. A single percentage labelled "statutory cost" is too blunt for a final comparison.

Ask every provider for the same six-row answer:

Quote row What to request
Service fee Monthly fee, setup charge, minimum commitment, and discount term
Employer costs Each statutory line, wage base, ceiling, and trigger
Benefits Statutory and optional items priced separately
Billing Invoice date, payment deadline, corrections, and credits
Currency Invoice currency, conversion method, spread, and fee
Exit Notice support, offboarding fee, document handover, and final-settlement owner

Send the same scenario to every finalist: work state, job title, managerial responsibility, monthly compensation and components, start date, benefits, expected headcount, and contract term. The completed sheet exposes where a low service fee depends on a different currency method, a setup charge, or a thinner service scope.

For a deeper model that separates the service fee from threshold-sensitive employer costs, use our India cost guide.

1. Borderless AI

Best for: Companies that want direct India employment, a published price, and country-specific payroll administration.

Price: $579 per employee per month.

We employ India team members through our owned local entity. The service covers country-specific agreements, payroll, taxes, statutory contributions, and ongoing employment administration.

Strengths

  • Owned legal entity in India
  • Public $579 monthly list price
  • Country-specific payroll and employment administration
  • In-house support

Tradeoff and diligence question: Our list fee is higher than the lowest starting prices in this ranking. Ask us for an India quote that separates the service fee, statutory employer costs, benefits, currency terms, and any non-standard requests.

2. Asanify

Best for: Employers concentrating hiring in India and prioritizing local payroll depth at a low starting fee.

Price: Starts at $99 per employee per month. A one-time onboarding fee may apply.

Asanify employs India team members through its wholly owned Indian entity, Asanify Technologies Pvt Ltd. Its India service combines EOR administration, local payroll, statutory filings, and HR software.

That local focus makes Asanify a credible alternative when India is the main hiring market. A buyer adding several other countries should inspect how the entity and delivery model changes in each one.

Strengths

  • Wholly owned Indian entity
  • Low public starting price
  • India-focused payroll and statutory administration
  • HR software included in the operating model

Tradeoff and diligence question: Confirm the onboarding fee, final price at the planned headcount, and the entity and service owner for every country outside India.

3. Deel

Best for: Companies managing India as part of a broad multi-country workforce.

Price: Starts at $599 per employee per month.

Deel offers India EOR service through a wholly owned Indian entity. Its broader platform brings EOR, payroll, HR workflows, reporting, and benefits administration into one system.

The breadth can reduce tool changes for a team operating across many markets. For a small India-only workforce, the comparison should focus on which wider workflows will actually be used and what appears on the final invoice.

Strengths

  • Wholly owned Indian entity
  • Broad multi-country platform
  • Payroll, reporting, and HR workflows in one system
  • Public starting price

Tradeoff and diligence question: Compare the value of platform consolidation with a narrower India specialist. Request the full India invoice after benefits, currency conversion, and optional services.

4. Remote

Best for: Buyers that want an owned-entity model and consistent workflows across several countries.

Price: $699 per employee per month at the standard monthly rate.

Remote owns its India legal entity and provides its EOR services in-house. It combines local employment with standardized multi-country contracts, payroll, benefit administration, and employee workflows.

Remote's direct model is a real strength. Its $699 standard fee is also the highest public list price in this roster, so buyers should compare the value of its infrastructure with their actual country mix and support needs.

Strengths

  • Owned India entity
  • In-house EOR delivery
  • Standardized multi-country workflows
  • Public standard monthly price

Tradeoff and diligence question: Confirm the benefit package, payroll cutoff, monthly or committed contract terms, and total India invoice before comparing it with a lower-fee provider.

5. Native Teams

Best for: Teams that want EOR service alongside payroll and expense-management tools.

Price: Starts at $99 per employee per month, with a tailored quote.

Native Teams becomes the legal employer through a local India entity. Its product combines contracts, payroll, statutory administration, benefits, onboarding, offboarding, and expense tools.

The low starting price deserves attention, while the employing entity's name and ownership remain details to secure in the written proposal.

Strengths

  • India EOR availability
  • Low public starting price
  • Local India legal employer
  • Payroll and expense tools in the same product family

Tradeoff and diligence question: Request the legal employer's full name and owner, the final India fee, included features, billing schedule, and currency method in writing.

6. RemoFirst

Best for: Cost-conscious teams that want one provider across an international workforce.

Price: Starts at $199 per employee per month and varies by country.

RemoFirst acts as the formal employer for India team members. Its service includes payroll, tax administration, benefits access, and local employment support, with no minimum contract term.

The starting fee is attractive, although the India employing entity's ownership remains unverified and the published fee can vary by country.

Strengths

  • Low public starting fee
  • India EOR availability
  • No minimum contract term
  • International payroll and employment administration

Tradeoff and diligence question: Request the India legal employer's name and owner, the country-specific fee, each statutory employer line, billing schedule, and currency-conversion method.

Choose the provider that can explain an exit before one occurs

An India exit can turn on employee classification, establishment size, work state, contract language, tenure, and the reason employment ends. The useful provider distinction is operational: who reviews the case, prepares the documents, calculates final amounts, and communicates each step?

Ask each finalist to walk through one realistic scenario for your workforce. Require it to identify the decision owner, documents, expected sequence, and fees. Our India exit guide covers the deeper legal questions.

When an EOR fits an India hiring plan

An EOR is usually practical for a company employing its first few people in India, testing a team before opening an entity, or centralizing employment administration across several countries.

Your company still directs the employee's work and objectives. The EOR becomes the legal employer and administers the employment relationship. At larger, stable headcounts, compare the recurring EOR cost with the cost and control of operating your own Indian entity.
